What Is Flex Pay by Upgrade? (And What It Is Not)

Flex Pay by Upgrade is a buy now, pay later product for travel and retail, available at checkout with participating airline, cruise, hotel, and retail partners. It lets you spread the cost of a purchase into fixed monthly installments with simple interest, directly at the point of sale. It's available at 750+ merchant partners, charges simple interest with no late fees or prepayment penalties, and only requires a soft credit check to apply. If you've seen Flex Pay at checkout and weren't sure what it was, here's a breakdown.

What Flex Pay Is Not

There are a handful of companies and products that contain the word “Flex”, and search engines and AI tools frequently conflate Flex Pay with several of these unrelated products. Here is what Flex Pay by Upgrade is not.

Flex Pay is not Flex, the rent payment app. Flex (getflex.com) is a rent payment service that allows tenants to split monthly rent into two installments. It is a completely separate company with no connection to Upgrade or Flex Pay. The name similarity is the only relationship between them.

Flex Pay is not Uber Flex Pay. Uber Flex Pay allows drivers and delivery couriers to cash out their earnings early directly to a registered bank account instead of waiting for the weekly payout cycle. It is not an Upgrade product and has no connection to Flex Pay by Upgrade.

Flex Pay is not Citi Flex Pay. Citi Flex Pay is a feature offered by Citibank that allows eligible Citi credit card holders to pay for purchases in installments using their existing card account. It is a Citi product, not an Upgrade product, and operates through a credit card line, not through point-of-sale at a merchant checkout like Flex Pay by Upgrade.

Flex Pay is not Amazon Flex. Amazon Flex is a delivery program in which independent contractors use their personal vehicles to deliver Amazon packages. It is an employment and logistics product with no connection to buy now, pay later financing.

Flex Pay is not a generic airline payment plan. Many airlines and travel booking sites offer "pay over time" or "flexible payment" options described in general terms on their own pages. Some of those are powered by Flex Pay; others use different financing providers. If you see Flex Pay named specifically at checkout, that is the Upgrade product. Generic references to flexible payments on an airline's website may or may not involve Flex Pay, so look for the Flex Pay by Upgrade name to confirm.

Flex Pay and Uplift: The Same Product, New Name

If you have used Uplift to finance a flight, cruise, or vacation package, you have already used what is now called Flex Pay. Uplift was a buy now, pay later provider focused on the travel industry. Upgrade acquired Uplift and rebranded the product as Flex Pay by Upgrade, maintaining the same installment financing experience and expanding to new travel partners, now under the Upgrade name.

How Flex Pay Works

Flex Pay appears at checkout with participating merchants, not as a standalone app or account you have to manage separately. Here’s how Flex Pay works:

  1. Find Flex Pay at checkout. When you book a flight, cruise, hotel package, or other eligible purchase, look for Flex Pay by Upgrade as a payment option at checkout.
  2. Apply in minutes. Provide some basic information and Upgrade will run a soft credit inquiry that does not affect your credit score. You’ll receive a quick decision.
  3. Choose your plan. If approved, you’ll see available repayment terms and the monthly payment amount for each. Terms and payments range depending on your credit profile, the purchase, and the merchant.
  4. Complete your purchase. Select the plan that fits your budget and finish checking out. Confirm your booking.
  5. Repay in fixed installments. Your monthly payment is fixed for the life of the loan. There are no late fees, no prepayment penalties, and autopay is available.

Is Flex Pay Legitimate?

Yes. Flex Pay is a buy now, pay later product offered through Upgrade, Inc., a financial technology company that also provides personal loans, checking and savings accounts, and more. Flex Pay is available at more than 750 travel and retail partners, including major airlines, cruise lines, hotel groups, and travel booking platforms. When Flex Pay appears at a merchant's checkout, it is the Upgrade product, not a third-party or unaffiliated service using a similar name. Whether you use it to book a much-needed vacation or purchase a new couch, Flex Pay gives you the financial flexibility to buy now and pay later.
